The Wide Area Search course is 24 hours, three days in length, eight hours of instruction each day. The course is grant-funded by the Department of Homeland Security and is provided on-site for eligible jurisdictions throughout the United States. The course is applicable to jurisdictions that would need to conduct wide area searches due to a natural disaster or terrorist incident. Participants will learn practical search methods and skills in order to perform systematic searches over a large affected area. The course concludes with a table top exercise that requires participants to utilize the previous two days of instruction. The curriculum of this course is based on lessons learned from search operations in support of the Space Shuttle Columbia recovery, Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Dolly, Ike and other wide area search incidents.

Upon completion of the course, participants will be issued a TEEX Certificate of Completion. Participants not able to complete all portions of this course will be issued a TEEX Certificate of Attendance.
Jurisdictions requiring assistance in establishing regional search and rescue capabilities in the areas of Structural Collapse, CBRNE response, and Water Rescue are encouraged to contact the TEEX US&R Technical Assistance Program.
This course is designed for all emergency responders from municipal and industrial agencies that would be required to perform wide area urban search operations during a natural disaster or terrorist incident, including city, county, private or regional fire departments and responder agencies that have a need for wide area urban search capabilities. Course participants include Fire Service (FS), Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Law Enforcement (LE), Emergency Management Agency (EMA), Hazardous Materials (HZ), Military (MT), and Civil Defense (CD) personnel.
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded 2.4 Continuing Education Units (CEU) certified through the International Association for Continuing Education & Training.
Hosting Requirements
Course delivery is at your location. The jurisdiction must provide a full roster to TEEX US&R one month before the beginning of the course. The hosting jurisdiction must provide classrooms and/or a training facility. Classes will begin at 8:00 a.m. on the first day of the course, unless other arrangements have been made. This class is entirely classroom based and does not require an personnel protective equipment.
This course is sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security Office of Grants and Training at no cost to local jurisdictions across the United States. Jurisdictions are encouraged to contact the Urban Search and Rescue Division at TEEX to schedule the delivery of this course.
The cost of travel, lodging, or per diem for students attending this course is the responsibility of the sponsoring jurisdiction.
