Course Description


TNG10S - Disaster Canine Search Specialist - 50.00 Hours

Prerequisites


There are no prerequisites for this course.
    Special Instructions for canines to accompany handlers to the course:
  • Make sure the canine has up-to-date vaccinations.
  • Canine team must be affiliated with a state, regional or city Search and Rescue organization.
  • A female canine in heat will not be allowed to attend.
  • Canine must have basic obedience including the ability to recall.
  • Only one canine allowed per handler.
  • Canine should give a bark indication when detecting live human scent.

Due to the strenuous nature of search and rescue activities, participants should secure a professional evaluation of their physical condition prior to enrolling in these courses.

The Disaster Canine Search Specialist course is 50 hours, five days in length. It teaches the basic skills necessary for a Disaster Canine Team (handler and canine) to work safely and reliably in a collapsed structure environment. This course is also appropriate for the Canine Handler who is "between" dogs, this course teaches the handler what to look for in selecting a new canine partner and what skills the canine needs to be able to perform. This class includes a realistic night exercise in Disaster City®. For the Search Manager, the course teaches what to look for when selecting Canine Teams, what standards the Canine Team should be trained to, and the level of support that the teams will need to be successful.

Jurisdictions that receive Department of Homeland Security funding from their SAA (e.g. UASI, SHSP, ect.) may be able to utilize those funds to pay for TEEX US&R courses. Since states have varying processes and procedures for utilizing grant funds to take US&R training, the best resource will be your city or county administrator or comptroller of homeland security grant funding.

Upon completion of the course, participants will be issued a TEEX Certificate of Completion. Participants not able to complete all portions of this course will be issued a TEEX Certificate of Attendance.

Jurisdictions requiring assistance in establishing regional search and rescue capabilities in the areas of Structural Collapse, CBRNE response, and Water Rescue are encouraged to contact the TEEX US&R Technical Assistance Program.

    All emergency responders from municipal and industrial agencies. City, County, private or regional fire departments and responder agencies that have a need for search and rescue capabilities.

      Courses are offered in two ways:
    • Open enrollment is open to any agency listed above. These courses must have a minimum of 24 and can have a maximum of 36 participants. This course typically has a broad cross section of responders from across the nation and offers an excellent ability for lessons learned from other departments.


    • Contract classes TEEX can provide this course exclusively for a jurisdiction or region. When conducting contract classes, TEEX can provide additional tailored curriculum and field exercises based on the requirements of the contracting jurisdiction.
    Those individuals not part of a US&R organization need to contact TEEX US&R for approval to attend this course.

    Other Information

Classes will begin at 7:30 a.m. on the first day of this course, unless other arrangements have been made. Participants should plan travel to arrive the night before classes begin. The course delivery is at Disaster City in College Station, Texas. This course must have a minimum of 24 and can have a maximum of 36 participant. Canine teams that will be training on the rubble pile or inside of structures at Disaster City are required to bring the following items to the course:
  • Helmet, must be ANSI rated Z89.1­-Type 1 with headlamp
  • Steel toe safety boots, must be ANSI Z41 PT99 M1/75 C/75
  • Eye protection, (must be ANSI Z 87.1)
  • Work gloves (leather or extrication gloves)
  • Standard work/duty clothing including long sleeve shirts for every day of class
  • Raingear suitable for search and rescue operations. Class exercises are conducted rain or shine.
  • Kneepads & elbowpads
  • Hand held flashlight
  • Flat collar & training collar, leash and long line
  • Crate for Hotel Room
  • Water Bowl
  • At least two canine toys & canine treats
If the minimum number of students required to conduct this class have not registered 24 calendar days prior to the class start date, the class will be canceled. It is imperative that agencies/individuals wishing to enroll in this course make arrangements to register and make payment prior to this deadline.
