Course Description


EMS110 - Emergency Medical Technician Basic - 264.00 Hours

Prerequisites

Clinical/Internship Pre-requisites:
  • Valid American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR or American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification
  • Proof of immunizations to include:
    • Negative tuberculosis test within 6 months of course start
    • two measles, mumps rubella (MMR) vaccinations (any time in life)
    • Tetanus (within ten years)
    • Hepatitis-B vaccination series (three shots) completion or proof of positive titer
    • Must have proof of the chicken pox (varicella) disease or a positive immunity
  • Current criminal history background check

In order to obtain certification through the Texas Department of State Health Services, you will be required to prove that you are at least 18 years of age and that you have a high school diploma or GED.

Description

This course is a slow paced night course. Based on U.S. DOT approved curriculum, this course meets or exceeds minimum hours and content established by Department of State Health Services. Students successfully completing didactic and clinical components of this program will be eligible to receive a course completion certificate and the National Registry written and skills exam. The hospital and ambulance rotations are completed after the classroom portion of the class. The student will have up to three months after the last day of class to complete all class, clinical, and hospital requirements.

This listing is for the slower paced course. The slower paced course meets four hours a day from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm two or three days a week (depending on the session) and consists of 264 total hours. The total hours are divided into 152 didactic / lecture, 64 hospital clinical, and 48 ambulance internship.

Students will be required to provide the student textbook and associated student workbook. This class will be utilizing the Jones & Bartlett / AAOS Emergency Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured – 9th edition. You will be provided with clinical uniform shirt for clinical / internship rotations at a later date.

Other Information

  • NOTE: All registrations AND PAYMENTS must be received no later than 15 business days prior to the start of class. Contact our office at (979) 458-2998 for more details.
  • Class Uniforms: All EMS students attending a TEEX EMS Program course, at any level will be required to obtain and wear uniforms. Uniforms will consist of Program T-shirt, navy blue dickies, which may be purchased at any uniform supply shop, Wal-Mart, etc. and black, rubber soled shoes / boots (no tennis shoes) that can be polished.   • Clinical Uniforms: Clinical shirts and ID's will be provided to students and are part of their fees. Students will be required to provide navy blue dickies and black, rubber soled shoes / boots (no tennis shoes) that can be polished.
  • Students will be required to provide a blood pressure cuff and stethoscope (available at most medical supply places). TEEX will provide students with a pocket mask with a one way valve. Students will be expected to bring all three items with them to each class session.
