Course Description


MAR002 - Advanced Fire Fighting (TXEESTI-15) - 32.00 Hours

Prerequisites

Due to the strenuous nature of firefighting and rescue activities, participants should secure a professional evaluation of their physical condition prior to enrolling in these courses.

Description

The Advanced Marine Firefighting course emphasizes hands-on training to provide students with the skills necessary to effectively lead an emergency response team aboard a merchant vessel or offshore facility. Supplementing the hands-on training are a number of classroom presentations utilizing lectures, demonstrations, case histories, class discussions and visual presentations.

Students will be assigned to various positions on emergency response teams and will be asked to respond to different live fire situations as an organized unit. Students, as attack team and scene leaders, will assess the situation, decide on a course of action and implement chosen tactics to successfully control the incident.

  • Fire hose and nozzle review
  • SCBA review
  • Interior firefighting review
  • Pre-fire planning
  • Organization of a fire party
  • Firefighting in port
  • Size-up
  • Case histories
  • Use of water and its effects on stability
  • Storage and handling of hazardous materials
  • Tactical components of shipboard firefighting
  • Inspection and servicing of firefighting equipment
  • Use of fixed fire extinguishing systems
  • Training of a fire party

Audience

Any merchant marine or offshore petroleum industry personnel who may be required to perform in a leadership role in response to a fire aboard ship or at their facility

Other Information

Students will be provided with the knowledge and skills required to conduct a rapid, precise size-up of a fire, to determine the correct course of action (strategy) and to direct an appropriate tactical response with the resources at hand.

The course exceeds IMO, STCW and U.S. Coast Guard advanced firefighting training requirements.

Tuition includes course materials, protective clothing and lunch. Lodging is not included. Tuition must be paid prior to or on the first day of class unless other arrangements have been made.

Students should wear comfortable work clothes. Shorts, opened-toed shoes, and sleeveless shirts are not allowed. Students are required to participate in hands-on activities utilizing self contained breathing apparatus and therefore must be clean shaven while attending class. Facial hair must not be present where the SCBA mask seal contacts the skin. Mustaches and normal sideburns are permitted.
