Course Description

AIR565 - Vehicle Damage & Energy Relationship (CRUSH) - 40.00 Hours

Prerequisites

Participants must have completed a reconstruction course or an equivalent course of study.

Required Materials
Participants are required to bring a scientific calculator and measuring equipment, such as templates and rulers.

Description

This course is designed both as a refresher for the experienced reconstructionist and a follow-up to or expansion of many of the topics the reconstructionist may have been exposed to in previous courses. The course content includes an overview of the underlying physics concepts which are applied to this type of collision analysis, as well as a historical and practical approach to the “crush damage” to energy relationship. Supplementing concept lectures with case studies and sample problems, this course also offers the student an opportunity to challenge notions and share ideas with others in the field in an open learning environment.

Topics

  • Work and energy concepts as applied to motor vehicles and motor vehicle collisions
  • The relationship between kinetic energy and “crush” or residual permanent damage
  • Limits and appropriate applications of damage-based collision analysis
  • Coefficients of stiffness
  • Calculating energy dissipation that causes damage to a vehicle
  • Recognizing the value of the energy dissipation equation in reconstruction

Audience

Commissioned peace officers and private consultants/reconstructionists
