Course Description

ICS200 - Incident Command System: Integrating Public Health into the Community Response - 20.00 Hours

Prerequisites

None

Description

The course is delivered using a team teaching approach, in which a public health professional and an emergency management professional provide joint instruction throughout the modules. The course combines brief lectures, small group activities, and a tabletop exercise. Additionally, participants in their course are prepared to take the FEMA ICS 200 certification test. The Incident Command System for Public Health can be delivered to a local or state jurisdiction/venue at a time of the jurisdiction’s choosing. Optimally, NERRTC will provide the instructors and the training materials, and the hosting jurisdiction will provide the course participants and adequate classroom facilities.

Topics

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • ensure that their community’s health and medical resources are coordinated with emergency management and are able to work with both state and federal agencies,
  • describe their organization’s role in the ICS and be able to operate within a Unified Command (UC) structure during an emergency response,
  • recognize a potential terrorist threat or incident,
  • identify the CBRNE agents most likely to be encountered, and
  • apply the concepts learned throughout the course to small group activities in which public health serves as the lead agency or a supporting role in a disaster situation.

    Audience

This course brings together essential personnel from within a jurisdiction who would be required to prevent, manage, or respond to the crisis and consequences of a CBRNE/terrorist incident in their community. Course participants represent public health, health care services, fire services, law enforcement, emergency medical services, hazardous materials response, emergency planning, emergency communications, and public works.
