TNG13Z - Disaster Canine Workshop - 8.00 Hours

There are no prerequisites for this course.

Special Instructions for canines to accompany handlers to the course:
  • Make sure the canine has up-to-date vaccinations.

  • A female canine in heat will not be allowed to attend.

This course is a series of workshops taught 3 times per year. Registration is allowed only online via credit card to reduce administrative costs. Each workshop is 8 Hours, one day in length. The workshop addresses current training needs within the state and continually improves and or expands modules to meet participant expectations. The series is designed to provide participants with the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to work as a First Responder Canine Handler. The course does not certify the Canine Team, but instead provides the ability to test the handler and canine in various disaster and/or urban search and rescue environments. The course can be tailored or expanded to meet the particular needs of your state or regional team.

Upon completion of the course, participants will be issued a TEEX Certificate of Completion. Participants not able to complete all portions of this course will be issued a TEEX Certificate of Attendance.

Jurisdictions requiring assistance in establishing regional search and rescue capabilities in the areas of Structural Collapse, CBRNE response, and Water Rescue are encouraged to contact the TEEX US&R Technical Assistance Program.

Audience

Canine Handlers who may be first responders to disasters in their state. This course must have a minimum of 8 and can have a maximum of 48 participants.

Other Information


Classes will begin at 8:00 a.m. on the first day of this course, unless other arrangements have been made. Course delivery is at Disaster City in College Station, Texas. Please note that lunch will be provided. Canine teams that will be training on the rubble pile or inside of structures at Disaster City are required to bring the following items to the course:

  • Helmet, must be ANSI rated Z89.1­-1997 Type 1
  • Steel toe safety boots, must be ANSI Z41 PT99 M1/75 C/75
  • Eye protection, (must be ANSI Z-87.1)
  • Work gloves (leather or extrication gloves)
  • Standard work/duty clothing including long sleeve shirts
  • Raingear suitable for search and rescue operations. Class exercises are conducted rain or shine.
  • Kneepads
    Feburary Class Schedule:

  • 0800-0930 Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM)
  • 0930-1200 Basic Knots and Rope Systems
  • 1300-1700 Live/HRD Disaster Canine Problems in Disaster City
  • 1700-Depart
If the minimum number of students required to conduct this class have not registered 24 calendar days prior to the class start date, the class will be canceled. It is imperative that agencies/individuals wishing to enroll in this course make arrangements to register and make payment prior to this deadline.
