LET585 - First Line Supervisor - 24.00 Hours

Prerequisites

None

Required Materials
Participants should bring a copy of agency rules and regulations and blank copies of employee evaluation forms.

Education Credits
This course meets the requirements for the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCLEOSE) Course #3737.

Description

This 24-hour course is mandatory for newly promoted supervisors and must be completed within the first 24 months of promotion. Participants will receive training vital to effective leadership, including ethics, effective communication, leadership styles, counseling, planning and organizing, and cultural diversity.

Topics

  • Making the transition from line officer to supervisor
  • Identifying common threads in leadership, management and supervision
  • Using leadership, counseling, motivation and communication skills effectively
  • Understanding values, ethics, and fundamental principles of leadership and supervision
  • Understanding the supervisor's role as it relates to the overall goals of the agency
  • Using a systematic approach to identify and solve problems
  • Understanding administrative tasks such as budgeting, scheduling, planning, and staffing
  • Applying work performance measures and employee evaluations
  • Applying liability and civil rights issues for supervisors
  • Understanding the benefits of working with citizens and addressing citizen's complaints

    Special investigative issues are also introduced:

  • Child abuse
  • Family violence
  • Sexual assault
  • Use of force

    Audience

    The participant should be a supervisor in a public safety or law enforcement agency or anticipate promotion to a supervisor position in the near future. The course is also beneficial for those who are responsible for the day-to-day supervision of law enforcement or similar personnel.
